Basketball Madness

Last night was a major night in college basketball as 3 of the top ten teams in the nation lost last night. This has major implications for the NCAA Tournament for seeding. Purdue, Cincinnati, and Ohio State were ranked 6, 5, and 8respectively but that all changed last night. Purdue played Wisconsin and the first half was very ugly as nobody could make a shot and the first half ended 21-21 which was Purdue’s lowest scoring half all year and their offense looked stagnant. Wisconsin boosted their so far dismal season as they went on to win the game by a score of 57-53 while Purdue after one of the longest winning streaks in the country have now dropped 3 straight. Cincinnati typically has one of the best defenses in the country. That was not the case last night as Houston made shot after shot and the Bearcats struggled on the offensive end all night. Houston ended up winning the game 67-62. Lastly Ohio State lost to Penn State for the second time this season. Penn State has had their number and they were all over the Buckeyes yesterday. They would go on to a dominant 79-56 performance and greatly boosted their chance at a NCAA tournament bid. These 3 games all caused mayhem in the college basketball world and it will be interesting to see were they fall come the new rankings.

Big Ten

The Michigan Wolverines Men’s Basketball team won the Big Ten Tournament for the second year in a row yesterday defeating Purdue by a score of 75-66.

The first half was a tough back and forth battle with Purdue and Michigan both feeling each other out and trading baskets for the whole first half. The Wolverines went into the half with a 38-33 lead after a late 3 pointer by Charles Matthews. The second half was all Wolverines. At one point in the second half the Wolverines were up by 18 points and Purdue had no answer for Michigans diverse offense and stifling defense. Purdue was held to a season low 66 points and the Wolverines have a ton of momentum going into the NCAA tournament. Moritz Wagner led the way with 17 points and Jon Teske also had a big game for Michigan. Wagner won the MVP of the tournament.

Michigan once again won 4 games in 4 days to claim the Big Ten Tournament crown and this is the best defensive team that John Beilein has had since his 2013 team that went to the national championship game. They also have an offense that has lots of different weapons and are very hard to defend. With this win they look to greatly improve their seeding in the NCAA tournament and right now no team in the country wants to draw them in March.
